Psychological Development Across the Life Cycle
Part II: Adolescence through Late Life

Course Description:
There are developmental challenges to be mastered throughout the life cycle from infancy through old age. This course will utilize a psychoanalytic perspective to explore these intrapsychic and interpersonal developmental tasks and the issues resulting from failure to master them.
This course is given in two parts, Part I in the fall semester and Part II in the spring. Each semester's course will be 16 sessions.
Part I began with an introduction to the psychoanalytic developmental model, followed by a discussion of defenses and their role in development. The developmental tasks of the child, from the establishment of psychic structures in infancy to the beginnings of the reorganization of these structures in preadolescence, were addressed.
Part II will build on the developmental issues addressed in Part I to explore the psychological tasks of adolescence through end of life. The continuum of psychological development throughout the life cycle will be a major focus of this course. Readings from classic and more recent articles, including different theoretical perspectives, will be assigned. Relevant clinical material will be presented, and class members will have ample opportunity for discussion.
This course is appropriate for intermediate through advanced students, as well as clinicians with extensive experience who have permission of the instructor.
Prerequisite: The prerequisite for this course is Development, Part I. Applicants who haven't taken Development, Part I can register for the course with permission of the instructors.

Training Program Credit: Students who successfully complete this course can earn credit in both the psychoanalysis and psychoanalytic psychotherapy training programs.
Registration Fee: $25
Registration deadline is January 12. Registration fee is due by January 12.
Matriculated students aren't charged a course registration fee.
Non-matriculated students who register for more than one course in a semester pay only one registration fee.
The registration fee is non-refundable.

In special circumstances we may accept registrations after the registration deadline, but there will be an additional $20 late registration fee.
Tuition: $650 Due January 16
$485 for students matriculated in the training programs
$600 for residents and graduate students
Payment plans can be arranged with the Administrator.
Cancellation:
The registration fee is nonrefundable.
Students who cancel before class begins will be given a tuition refund less a $40 administrative fee.
There will be no refunds for cancellations after class begins.
Students who drop the class after it begins are expected to pay the full tuition.

About the Instructors:
Nancy Livingston, MD is a psychiatrist, psychoanalyst, and supervisor of mental health professionals, in private practice since 1977. She completed her residency in child, adolescent, and adult psychiatry at Duke Medical Center. Dr. Livingston graduated from the Duke-UNC Psychoanalytic Education Program (now the Psychoanalysis Training Program of the Psychoanalytic Education Center of the Carolinas). She has been a teaching analyst in this analytic program since 1992 and is an Assistant Clinical Professor on the faculty of the Duke Department of Psychiatry. She has also held positions in psychoanalytic organizations on the local and national levels.
Rex Moody, MD has been practicing psychoanalytic psychotherapy since 1991. Board Certified in Psychiatry in 1993, he became involved with the UNC/Duke Psychoanalytic Institute shortly thereafter (now known as the Psychoanalytic Education Center of the Carolinas). Dr. Moody has an appointment as Adjunct Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at UNC and as Clinical Adjunct at Duke University's Department of Psychiatry. He is also on faculty at the Psychoanalytic Education Center of the Carolinas. Dr. Moody has been teaching and supervising psychiatry residents from UNC and Duke since the mid 1990's, and is active in several professional organizations. Currently he is serving as President of the NC Psychoanalytic Society.
Course Objectives:
Class participants will be able to:
Understand the concept of developmental lines and developmental tasks.
Clarify the unique aspects of a psychoanalytic approach to development.
Conceptualize the ways in which psychological development may occur throughout the life cycle.
Apply relevant concepts of drive theory, ego psychology, object relations and attachment theory, and self psychology to more comprehensively explore the developmental process.
Identify the significant developmental tasks of adolescence through late life.
Discuss possible negative experiences during different stages of development and their consequences.
Explore the significant factors in the transition periods between major developmental stages.
Utilize clinical material to illustrate developmental concepts, including material from their own experiences
Foster class discussion among class members of different disciplines to expand understanding of concepts
