Mission
The mission of the Psychoanalytic Education Center of the Carolinas is:
- To train clinicians in the theory and practice of psychoanalysis and psychoanalytic psychotherapy.
- To encourage psychoanalytic research.
- To promote psychoanalytic scholarship.
- To improve the accessibility of psychoanalytic training and treatment.
Psychoanalysis is a branch of Psychology devoted to understanding human development, human relationships, mental health, and mental illness as products of the unique interaction among each individual’s thoughts, feelings, behaviors, culture and environment. Psychoanalysts have developed a method of treatment centered on systematic exploration of unconscious phenomena and their relationships with the conscious, neurobiological, and social phenomena upon which other treatment modalities focus.
The PECC nurtures a psychoanalytic attitude through educational experiences characterized by disciplined study and inquiry. These experiences emphasize open discussion of and consistent attention and sensitivity to the complexities and subjectivity inherent in individual, organizational, and community structures.
The PECC is committed to upholding high standards of ethics, education, and professional practice as endorsed by the American Psychoanalytic Association.
