Building Parental Alliances: Strengthening Psychodynamic Treatment of Latency-age Children and Adolescents

Course Description:
This 8 session course is designed to assist clinicians working with latency-age and adolescent clients in developing and strengthening parental alliances as a necessary element for treatment.
Using the Novicks' text as the conceptual backdrop, we will explore some essential elements of supportive parental treatment alliances, including:
  • privacy and confidentiality issues
  • establishing working hypotheses
  • creating common language and terms
  • identifying and addressing initial obstacles to the alliance
  • implementing strategies for addressing obstacles
  • Students will have the opportunity to present cases, and we will discuss how to integrate the course material into their clinical work.
    Class will be limited to 10 students and is intended for clinicians at beginning through intermediate levels who are working with children and parents.

    Class Size: Class will be limited to 10 students.

    CME Credits: 12
    CE Credits: 9 Category A & 3 Category B
    LPC Credits: 12 CE clock hours
    Training Program Credit: Students who successfully complete this course can earn elective credit in both the psychoanalysis and psychoanalytic psychotherapy training programs.
    Registration Fee:
  • Matriculated students aren't charged a course registration fee.
  • Non-matriculated students who register for more than one course in a semester pay only one registration fee.
  • Non-matriculated students should include the registration fee with the course application.
  • By February 8: $25
    After February 8: $40
    Registration Deadline: February 29
    In special circumstances we may accept registrations after February 29, but there will be an additional $20 late registration fee.
    Tuition: Due February 29
    $235 for students matriculated in the training programs
    $290 for psychiatry residents and graduate students
    $315 for non-matriculated students
    Payment plans can be arranged with the Administrative Director.
    Cancellation:
  • The registration fee is non-refundable.
  • Students who cancel after the registration deadline but before class begins will be given a tuition refund less a $40 administrative fee.
  • There will be no refunds for cancellations after class begins.
  • Students who drop the class after it begins are expected to pay the full tuition.

    About the Instructor:
    John Tisdale, DMin, LPC is a licensed psychotherapist, an ordained United Methodist minister, and an advanced candidate in adult and child psychoanalysis in the Psychoanalytic Education Center of the Carolinas. He practices with the Center for Psychological and Family Services in Chapel Hill, NC, where he works with adults and specializes in the treatment of children, adolescents, and parents. He completed his Master’s of Divinity degree at Duke University and his Doctorate of Ministry degree in pastoral counseling from the Graduate Theological Foundation located in South Bend, Indiana. He has worked in the Juvenile Court as a court counselor and served as pastor of a local church congregation.
    Course Objectives:
    Class participants will be able to:
  • identify important features of parental alliances necessary for sustaining treatment.
  • develop strategies for enhancing these features with parents.
  • recognize potential obstacles to parental alliances.
  • practice creating strategies for addressing obstacles.
