The Analytic Attitude, Part II

Students may register for Part II of The Analytic Attitude even if they have not taken Part I. (See prerequisite below.)

Course Description:
This course will focus on clinical case material in order to clarify the techniques of psychoanalytic psychotherapy. We will emphasize the development of an analytic attitude towards the work in psychotherapy and explore how to develop greater intensity within a psychotherapy case.
Readings will focus on developing an understanding of the Relational School of Psychoanalysis and the nuances of that approach to one's therapeutic technique.
Students will have the opportunity to present cases, and we will discuss how to integrate the course material into their clinical work.
Class will be limited to 10 students and is intended for clinicians at intermediate through advanced levels.
Prerequisite: Students will need a basic exposure to and understanding of psychoanalytic theory and its application to the treatment of patients. Applicants can meet this requirement through previous coursework, training, or supervision (e.g., Thinking Psychoanalytically: The Basics; the PPSC Introductory Course; psychoanalytic coursework or supervision in graduate school/residency or post-graduation). Applicants who do not meet this requirement may register for the course with permission of the instructors.

LPC Credits: 24 CE clock hours
Training Program Credit: Students who successfully complete this course can earn credit in both the psychoanalysis and psychoanalytic psychotherapy training programs.
Registration Fee:
Matriculated students aren't charged a course registration fee.
Non-matriculated students who register for more than one course in a semester pay only one registration fee.
Non-matriculated students should include the registration fee with the course application.

After Dec. 13: $40
Registration Deadline: January 3, 2012
In special circumstances we may accept registrations after January 3, but there will be an additional $20 late registration fee.
$485 for students matriculated in the certificate programs
$600 for psychiatry residents and graduate students
$650 for non-matriculated students
Payment plans can be arranged with the Administrative Director.
The registration fee is non-refundable.
Students who cancel after the registration deadline but before class begins will be given a tuition refund less a $40 administrative fee.
There will be no refunds for cancellations after class begins.
Students who drop the class after it begins are expected to pay the full tuition.
Syllabus: The course syllabus will be posted soon. Please check back for an update. There are no required texts.
About the Instructors:
Michael N. Macklin, MD is a practicing psychoanalyst in Chapel Hill. He has a particular interest in the widening scope of practice of psychotherapy and psychoanalysis, as well as in the broadest theoretical perspectives in psychoanalytic theory. He graduated from the UNC-Duke Psychoanalytic Education Program, now a component of the Psychoanalytic Education Center of the Carolinas (PECC). He taught many classes in the UNC-Duke Psychoanalytic Education Program, including Object Relations Theory, Self Psychology, and Widening Scope. He was co-chair for many years of theory section of the psychoanalytic curriculum committee, and he is a member of the faculty of the PECC.
Laurie J. Pahel, MD co-founded Chapel Hill Psychoanalytic Practice in 2007 with her husband, David Moore, PhD. She has been in private practice serving adults for over nine years. She is an adjunct faculty member of UNC Psychiatry Department, supervising residents in their psychotherapy work. She is a graduate of the UNC-Duke Psychoanalytic Education Program, now a component of the Psychoanalytic Education Center of the Carolinas (PECC). She is certified by the Board of Professional Standards of the American Psychoanalytic Association to practice psychoanalysis. She is a faculty member of PECC, as supervisor of psychoanalytic psychotherapists, a teacher, and a member of the Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy Steering Committee. She is chair of the Ethics Committee of the NC Psychoanalytic Society.
Course Objectives:
Class participants will:
Develop their ability to observe a clinical process from an analytic perspective.
Develop their understanding of how to increase the intensity in psychotherapy.
Develop their understanding of the relational perspective in psychoanalytic psychotherapy and psychoanalysis.
Deepen their understanding of the workings of transference and countertransference in the psychotherapy process.
