Psychological Development Across the Life Cycle

Course Description:
There are developmental challenges to be mastered throughout the life cycle from infancy to old age. This 16 session course will utilize a psychoanalytic perspective to explore these intrapsychic and interpersonal developmental tasks.
We will consider diverse theoretical perspectives using readings from classic and more contemporary articles. Relevant clinical material will be presented, and class members will have ample opportunity for discussion.
This course is appropriate for intermediate and advanced students, as well as clinicians with extensive experience who have permission of the instructor.
Prerequisite: Thinking Psychoanalytically: The Basics, or the PPSC Introductory Course, or an equivalent course, or permission of the instructor.
Time: Tuesday, 6:15 pm - 7:45 pm
Dates: August 31 - January 4 (no class on Nov. 23, Dec. 21, Dec. 28)
Class Size: Class will be limited to 10 students.

CE Credits: 9 Category A & 15 Category B
Training Program Credit: Students who successfully complete this course can earn credit in both the psychoanalysis and psychoanalytic psychotherapy training programs.
Registration Fee:
  • Matriculated students aren't charged a course registration fee.
  • Non-matriculated students who register for more than one course in a semester pay only one registration fee.
  • Non-matriculated students should include the registration fee with the course application.
  • By July 16: $25
    After July 16: $40
    Registration Deadline: August 21
    In special circumstances we may accept registrations after August 21, but there will be an additional $20 late registration fee.
    Tuition: Due August 21
    $485 for students matriculated in the training programs
    $600 for residents and graduate students
    $650 for non-matriculated students
    Cancellation:
  • The registration fee is non-refundable.
  • Students who cancel before class begins will be given a tuition refund less a $40 administrative fee.
  • There will be no refunds for cancellations after class begins.
  • Students who drop the class after it begins are expected to pay the full tuition.

    About the Instructors:
    Nancy T. Livingston, M.D. is a psychiatrist, psychoanalyst, and supervisor of mental health professionals, in private practice since 1977. She completed her residency in child, adolescent, and adult psychiatry at Duke Medical Center. Dr. Livingston graduated from the Duke-UNC Psychoanalytic Education Program (now the Psychoanalysis Training Program of the Psychoanalytic Education Center of the Carolinas). She has been a teaching analyst in this analytic program since 1992 and has an adjunct clinical appointment in the Duke Department of Psychiatry. She has also held positions in psychoanalytic organizations on the local and national levels.

    John Tisdale, D.Min. is a licensed psychotherapist, an ordained United Methodist minister, and an advanced candidate in adult and child psychoanalysis in the Psychoanalytic Education Center of the Carolinas. He practices with the Center for Psychological and Family Services in Chapel Hill, NC, where he works with adults and specializes in the treatment of children, adolescents, and parents. He completed his Master’s of Divinity degree at Duke University and his Doctorate of Ministry degree in pastoral counseling from the Graduate Theological Foundation located in South Bend, Indiana. He has worked in the Juvenile Court as a court counselor and served as pastor of a local church congregation.
    Course Objectives:
    Class participants will be able to:
  • Understand the concept of developmental lines.
  • Conceptualize the ways in which psychological development may occur throughout the life cycle.
  • Understand the development of psychic structures in early life.
  • Apply relevant concepts of drive theory, ego psychology, object relations and attachment theory, and self psychology to more comprehensively explore the developmental process.
  • Identify the significant developmental tasks of early and middle childhood, adolescence, young adulthood, midlife, and late life.
  • Clarify how later developmental tasks build on earlier ones.
  • Utilize clinical material to illustrate developmental concepts, including material from their own experiences.
  • Employ an understanding of psychological development in the clinical assessment of patients/clients.
  • Discuss the significance of the personal developmental narrative in psychotherapy and in individual maturation.
