Psychoanalytic Models of Brief Psychotherapy

Course Description:
This 8 session seminar addresses psychoanalytic approaches to brief treatment. The format includes lecture/discussion, a DVD case illustration, and opportunities to discuss students’ cases.
The seminar begins with a discussion of Freud's brief cases, followed by a historical survey of psychoanalytic efforts to shorten treatment, including the contributions of Alexander and French, Malan, Sifneos, Mann, and Davanloo.
The seminar will examine in depth the Vanderbilt model of Time-Limited Dynamic Psychotherapy, a relational psychodynamic model designed to treat a wide range of patients with chronic patterns of maladaptive interpersonal relationships.
Class will be limited to 10 students and is for clinicians at intermediate through advanced levels.
Prerequisite: Thinking Psychoanalytically: The Basics, or the PPSC Introductory Course, or an equivalent course, or permission of the instructor.

Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy: Students who successfully complete this course may be able to earn elective course credit in the psychotherapy training program. Registration Fee:
Matriculated students aren't charged a course registration fee.
Non-matriculated students who register for more than one course in a semester pay only one registration fee.
Non-matriculated students should include the registration fee with the course application.
By July 16: $25
After July16: $40
Registration Deadline: August 16
In special circumstances we may accept registrations after August 16, but there will be an additional $20 late registration fee.
$235 for students matriculated in the training programs
$290 for residents and graduate students
$315 for non-matriculated students
The registration fee is non-refundable.
Students who cancel before class begins will be given a tuition refund less a $40 administrative fee.
There will be no refunds for cancellations after class begins.
Students who drop the class after it begins are expected to pay the full tuition.

About the Instructor:

Jay C. Williams, PhD, LCSW is a clinical social worker who has been in private practice in Chapel Hill for 32 years. He is an Adjunct Professor of Social Work and Adjunct Associate Professor of Psychiatry at UNC and an Adjunct Assistant Professor at Smith College School for Social Work. He has been an instructor and supervisor in the Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy Study Center of NC, now the Psychotherapy Training Program of the Psychoanalytic Education Center of the Carolinas (PECC), from its beginning. He currently also serves as the Assistant Director of the PECC. He developed the Brief Treatment course at the UNC School of Social Work and has taught that course for more than 15 years. He is past president of the NC Society for Clinical Social Work and the Southeastern Region of the American Association of Psychiatric Services for Children and a Distinguished Practitioner and past chair of the Social Work Academy of the National Academies of Practice.
Course Objectives:
Class participants will:
Become familiar with the history of brief psychodynamic psychotherapy.
Become familiar with selection criteria for various models of brief psychodynamic therapy.
Understand how brief psychodynamic therapy techniques differ from those used in long-term psychoanalytic psychotherapy.
Have a general understanding of the brief psychodynamic models of Alexander and French, Malan, Sifneos, Davanloo, and Mann.
Develop beginning practice proficiency in the Vanderbilt Model of Time-Limited Dynamic Psychotherapy.
Understand how the finite time frame is used to advantage.
Understand how transference and countertransference are manifested and utilized.
Be able to compare the advantages and disadvantages of the various models discussed.
Have an opportunity to consider how the models discussed might be used with the student's own cases.
