Introduction to Psychodynamic Assessment: Fall 2010
Instructor: Laurie Pahel, MD
Assistant Instructor: Beverly M. Simmons, LCSW
Course Description:
This 10 session course will provide mental health clinicians with a psychoanalytic framework for approaching the clinical evaluation of clients—both new and complex on-going cases. Applying a psychoanalytic lens to patient assessment allows the clinician to more deeply consider the nuances each particular individual brings to the therapist’s office when seeking help.
Course sessions will require lively and active participation as we take turns role-playing patient/therapist interviews and interactions. Each student will be asked to prepare at least one case or case-composite for the role-playing activity. The instructors will demonstrate this technique in the first class. The primary text,
Psychoanalytic Diagnosis: Understanding Personality Structure in the Clinical Process by Nancy McWilliams, PhD, will inform our discussion of the participatory exercises. The tone of the class will be supportive and open-minded as we consider each participant’s viewpoint and interpretation of patient evaluation.
Class will be limited to 10 students and is for clinicians at beginning through intermediate levels.
