Psychoanalytic Perspectives on Human Development in the First Decade of Life


Course Description:

This 20 session course will provide an in depth exploration of the ways in which the mind evolves from infancy through the onset of adolescence.  Emphasis will be placed upon psychoanalytic developmental psychology as an integrative psychology that seeks to:
  • Coordinate the role of constitutional, environmental, interpersonal, and internal factors.
  • Synthesize the importance of subjective and objective realities in development.
  • Account for the biologically driven sequences of integrations and differentiations that occur within normal and pathological development.

    This course is intended for individuals with some background in psychoanalytic theory & technique.
    Prerequisite is the PPSC's Introductory Course, or Thinking Psychoanalytically: The Basics, or their equivalent. Students without this prerequisite may take the class with permission of the Course Admissions Committee.

    Students will receive CE/CME credit. Students will also be eligible to receive credit towards the certificate programs with evidence of mastery of the course material, including completion of a written assignment.

  • This class is being offered on Tuesday evening beginning in September and on Friday afternoon beginning in November.
  • Both the Tuesday evening class and the Friday afternoon class will be 20 sessions and will cover the same material.
  • Applications are still being accepted for the Friday afternoon class.

    About the Instructors:
    Donald L. Rosenblitt, MD is a child and adult psychoanalyst, and Clinical Director of the Lucy Daniels Center for Child Development. He is on the faculty of the Psychoanalytic Education Center of the Carolinas (PECC). He is a Supervising and Training Analyst on the faculty of the Psychoanalytic Institute of the Carolinas, the psychoanalysis certificate program of the PECC, and is Past Director of the Institute. He has written and lectured extensively on topics related to early childhood development.

    Barbara Snider, MD is a child and adolescent psychiatrist and an advanced candidate in adult and child psychoanalysis at the St. Louis Psychoanalytic Institute. She was a faculty member and supervisor in the Child Development Project and the Advanced Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy Program at the St. Louis Psychoanalytic Institute. She is currently on the staff of the Lucy Daniels Center for Early Childhood.

    Lisa Tust, PhD is a clinical psychologist in private practice in Chapel Hill, where she sees adults and children. She is Adjunct Faculty of the UNC School of Medicine where she supervises psychiatry residents, and she is an advanced candidate in the child psychoanalysis program of the Psychoanalytic Education Center of the Carolinas. She completed graduate training in the San Francisco Bay area and has done assessment and treatment with children in inpatient, outpatient, day treatment, and medical settings.

    Course Objectives:
    Class participants will be able to:
  • Understand the developmental process and its impact on the infant and child’s internal world and growing psychic structure.
  • Understand the stages of separation-individuation in normal and pathological development.
  • Understand the importance of the maternal-infant relationship and how it effects developing object relations, affect, cognition, the ego, drives and superego.
  • Understand the formation of gender identity, gender role identity, and sexual object choice.
  • Understand the meaning and differences of the Oedipal phase in boys and girls.
  • Describe the latency phase and the developmental achievements of that phase.
  • Recognize disturbances of personality development and organization, of learning, and of behavior in school-age children.
  • Understand how to assess psychopathology in latency age children.
  • Understand contemporary theories of female psychology.
