Introduction to Psychodynamic Assessment


Course Description:

This 10 session course offers a rich, clinical alternative to the DSM and symptom-based assessment and will provide an introduction to the process of psychodynamic assessment using the Psychodynamic Diagnostic Manual (PDM), the work of Nancy McWilliams, PhD, contributions from other psychoanalytic writers, and characters portrayed in literary works. Readings will include individual articles from various authors, sections of the PDM, and selections from McWilliams' three major publications, Psychoanalytic Diagnosis, Psychoanalytic Case Formulation, and Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy.

Class members will have the opportunity to discuss case material. Class will be limited to 12 students and is for clinicians at beginning through intermediate levels.

Certificate Program Credit: Students who successfully complete this course can earn credit in both the psychoanalysis and psychoanalytic psychotherapy certificate programs.

Registration Fee: Please include a check payable to PECC.
     By February 1: $25
     After February 1: $40

Registration Deadline: March 1
     In special circumstances we may accept registrations after March 1st,
     but there will be an additional $20 late registration fee.

Tuition: Due March 1
     $370 for non-matriculated students
     $345 for residents, graduate students, and other trainees
     $275 for students enrolled in a certificate program

Cancellation:
     The registration fee is non-refundable.
     Students who cancel before class begins will receive a tuition refund
        less a $40 administrative fee.
     There will be no refunds for cancellations after class has begun.

About the Instructors:

Ernest R. Braasch, MD is an adult psychiatrist and psychoanalyst who is in private practice in Raleigh. He is a Training and Supervising Analyst and faculty member in the Psychoanalytic Education Center of the Carolinas. He is a Past President of the NC Psychoanalytic Society and current CME/CE chair. He is an Assistant Consulting faculty member of the Duke Medical Center Department of Psychiatry.

Laurie J. Pahel, MD is a graduate of the Psychoanalytic Institute of the Carolinas and is co-founder of Chapel Hill Psychoanalytic Practice with her husband David Moore, PhD. She received clinical training at UNC in obstetrics & gynecology and completed her training at UNC in psychiatry. She is on the faculty of the Psychoanalytic Education Center of the Carolinas, is an adjunct faculty member of the UNC Dept of Psychiatry, and is chair of the NC Psychoanalytic Society Member Assistance Committee.

Course Objectives:
Class participants will be able to:
  • formulate a preliminary diagnosis and treatment plan.
  • discuss a diagnostic formulation and treatment strategy as clinical work unfolds.
  • consider the aims and technique of a first interview.
  • have a better understanding of specific personality disorders.
  • assess factors that cannot be changed that set limits to the clinical work, such as genetic and medical situations.
  • understand defense mechanisms and be able to assess the patient's defensive structure.
  • understand the development of affects and assess the patient's affect.
  • understand the meaning of developmental lines and be able to assess the patient's level of developmental progress.
  • assess the conflict, compromise formation, and relational patterns in patient material presented.
